About this tour

This route crosses the country from the Strait of Gibraltar to Marrakech. It starts in Tangier, passes through the white medina of Tetouan and Chefchaouen, spends time in Fez and then heads down to the Merzouga desert before ending in Marrakech along the road of the kasbahs.

Seven days leave room to see the northern cities calmly and to enjoy the desert without the whole trip being spent on the road. It is a very complete route for a first trip to Morocco, especially if you are arriving from Spain.

Highlights

  • Tangier and the Andalusian-influenced medina of Tetouan.

  • Chefchaouen and its blue streets in the Rif mountains.

  • A full day in the medina of Fez.

  • A night in the desert on the Erg Chebbi dunes.

  • The Todra gorges, the Dades valley and Aït Ben Haddou on the way to Marrakech.

Who is this route for?

For a first trip to Morocco that covers cities, mountains and desert, especially if you enter through the north. The pace is active but balanced.

Good to know

  • The days between Fez and the desert, and between the desert and Marrakech, involve quite a lot of driving.

  • In Fez, exploring the medina with a local guide is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a good route for a first trip to Morocco?

Yes. It combines the northern cities, the medina of Fez, the desert and the kasbah country of the south in one week, at a pace that leaves time for each place.

Can I reach Tangier by ferry from Spain?

Tangier has ferry connections with several ports in southern Spain, so it is a common entry point. Transport to Tangier is not part of the route unless stated in the quote.

How does it differ from the nine-day route?

Both follow the same journey. The nine-day route adds more time in Chefchaouen and Marrakech, at a more relaxed pace.
