A night in the Sahara: preparing your visit to Merzouga
The Erg Chebbi dunes, starry skies and golden sunrises: what to expect and what to pack for a night in the desert.
A night among the Erg Chebbi dunes, next to Merzouga, is for many travellers the most memorable moment of their trip to Morocco.
Getting there
The road trip from Marrakech is long, so it is usually done over two or three days, crossing the Atlas and stopping in the Dades valley or at kasbahs along the way. From Fez it is one long day's drive.
What to expect
You usually reach the camp at sunset, on foot or by camel, in time to see the dunes change colour. At night, far from any city, the starry sky is spectacular. It is worth getting up early for the sunrise.
What to pack
Warm clothes: nights are cold for much of the year.
A scarf or cap and sun protection for the day.
A head torch and a power bank.
A small backpack with what you need for one night.
Best time to go
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons. Summer days are extremely hot, and winter nights can be very cold.
